In time honoured tradition I present to you the World Cup 2010 prediction competition.  The competition is being run for the 6th Lichfield Scout Group to raise funds for the group and their activities in the coming year. The entry fee is just £2 - £1 goes to the prize fund and £1 to the scout group.

So how does the competition work?

There are 8 groups of 4 teams. They each play each other once within the group stage. The top two teams from each group go forward into the last 16.  From then on it is knockout format until the winner is crowned in Johannesburg.

The competition begins on the 11th June 2010 and finishes on 11th July 2010. Details can be found on the BBC website (fixtures, competition format etc)

https://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2010/default.stm

So what do you have to predict in the competition?

You are asked to predict a number of things (as shown on the entry form). Firstly you are asked to predict the position of each team within their respective groups. E.g. for England's group you may predict England 1st, Algeria 2nd, USA 3rd and Slovenia 4th. You are then asked to name the 16 countries you believe will reach the last 16; the 8 countries who’ll then go on into the quarter finals; the 4 countries that will reach the semi-finals; the 2 finalists, the World Cup 2010 winner; and who’ll win the third place play-off. In addition to this you are asked to name the countries that you expect to score and concede the most goals per game in the tournament.

How does the prediction competition scoring work then?

The group scoring is as follows. If you correctly place a team in a group you receive 3pts.  If your prediction is one place out (i.e. you predict England 2nd and they come 1st) you receive 1pt. If your prediction is further out (i.e. you predict England 1st and they actually finish 3rd or 4th) you will lose 1pt.

For correctly predicting a team to reach the last 16 you will receive 4pts.  For each correctly predicted quarter-finalist you will receive 6pts. For each correctly predicted semi-finalist you will receive 8pts.  You will receive 16pts for each correctly predicted finalist and 32pts if you correctly predict the winner. You will also receive 14pts for correctly predicting the country who finished 3rd (after the play-off).   You will receive 12pts for correctly predicting the team who scores the most goals per game and another 12pts if you correctly predict the team who concedes the most goals per game.

Please note that your predictions don’t have to follow a logical progression. Just because you have England and Algeria to finish 1st and 2nd in Group C doesn’t mean you have to put them automatically into the last 16.

So all that’s left is for you to fill in the entry form and get it to me. You can either email your predictions to me (using the form on the website – see below) at wc2010pred@gmail.com  or get a paper copy (overleaf) of your predictions to me via Ofwat, the Scout group or the address at the bottom. The same goes for the £2 entry fee, cheques accepted. Please make sure your name and email address are clearly written.

I hope this all makes sense! For those with email I will be able to keep you updated with the competition scores after each stage of the competition has finished. I have also set up a small website here: https://wc2010pred.webnode.com/ that will keep everyone up to date with what is going on.

Entries from family, friends, colleagues, anyone, [please pass it on!] are all welcomed. The more entries we have the more money we raise and the bigger the prize fund.

Entries need to be in by 5pm on the 10th June 2010.

Best of luck.  Come on England!
